The Empire

Priscus

He fought Verus in a famous match, and both were freed.

Years. AD 80, at the games of Titus. Birth years unknown.

We are not sure. We do not know when they were born, or what they did after that day. The poem is our main source.

Three short facts

  1. 1The match was at the opening games of the Colosseum.
  2. 2A poet says the fight was long and even.
  3. 3The emperor freed both men.

The story

Priscus and Verus were gladiators in Rome.

At Titus’s great games they fought each other for a long time.

Neither man would give up.

The crowd and the emperor honored both.

Each received the wooden sword that meant freedom.
