Roads and eagles
The army
The army built roads and camps as well as fighting. A legion was a big unit of soldiers. Men from many lands served.
Helmet
It protected the head. Plumes helped leaders stand out.
Shield
A big scutum could lock with others into a tortoise shape.
Sword
The gladius was short. Soldiers used it up close.
Spear
A pilum was thrown before the lines met.
Sandals
Caligae were tough. Little boots gave Caligula his nickname.
