Four story maps

The empire over time

Rome started as one city. Century by century its rule spread, then later split in two. These maps show the idea, not every border.

A story map with a wide burgundy land around the Mediterranean Sea
  1. Story map with a small burgundy patch in Italy

    Kingdom stories

    1. One city

The burgundy patch is early Rome, a city in Italy. The rest of the map is other people’s land.

  2. Story map with burgundy coasts in Spain, Italy, North Africa, and Greece

    After the wars with Carthage

    2. The Republic spreads

Rome now holds Italy, islands, parts of Spain, the African coast, and Greece. Carthage has been beaten.

  3. Story map with burgundy land from Britain to Egypt

    Around Trajan, early AD 100s

    3. A huge empire

The colored land runs from Britain to Egypt. This is near the biggest the empire got. It did not stay this large.

  4. Story map with a silver west and a gold east

    The later Empire

    4. Two halves

Silver is the west. Gold is the east. Rulers split the hard job. The west faded first. The east lasted much longer.
