The city

Rome was noisy, crowded, and full of stone. Some people lived in grand houses. Many lived in tall apartments.

    People met here to talk, shop, and hear news. It was the busy middle of the city.

    A rich family might have a domus with an open hall. Many families lived upstairs in insulae.

    The baths

    You could wash, exercise, and chat. Baths were a daily habit for lots of people.

    A temple

    A temple was a house for a god’s statue. Worship also happened at home.

    The racetrack

    The Circus Maximus held chariot races. Crowds yelled for their color of team.

    The arena

    The Colosseum came later, in the Empire. Shows there could be exciting and cruel.
